March/April 2004 - Renovations @ the Retreat

Getting ready for the Snow!

You may have noticed in the November posting, that the west gable was long overdue for maintenance. Well this month we got an extension ladder and we replaced the tattered sisalation at the peak (ruined the views though). Note 'The Inspector' observing all.

Speaking of the view, here is one from ground level bench in front of the dining room window at dusk.

He took some time to get used to his new bed but has realised it gives the Inspector's long legs more height for observing.

On this 'Canberra Day' holiday weekend we started Saturday by removing some weatherboards and old sisalation.

This gives an idea of what it looked like by mid afternoon. Note that there was some interior openings for windows that had not been completed to the outside. In a very long Saturday we got all the insulation in and a new layer of sisalation on the west gable.

The view from the upper 'windows'.

View from Kathryn's 'bench with a view'.

Sunday's job: An interior view of the new framing of the upper window openings. Initially, we will have opening windows in the triangular bits at the top to get some ventilation. If it does not get too hot then we will have a window in the long section on the right and a door on the left to a balcony - much, much later of course.

After Monday's framing of the opening, the insulated and re sisalation coated gable view.

A bit of late evening finishing touches using the old style Triton work bench.

Hey, I am actually starting to enjoy it here!

We have moved offices at work, to bring us onto the main Museum site on the Acton Peninsula, opposite downtown Canberra. I do not have quite as much shelf space, sharing one rather than having two but it is nicely fitted out and a pleasant local. Thru the trees is a lagoon, with the city just beyond on the north side of Lake Burley Griffin. Just need to get started cycling along the lake to work now!

The gable ready for replacing the weatherboards, I have included 'The' standard poodle for scale.
